Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH (SW) is presenting the highest machining performance available on the market in a series machine at EMO 2015 with the BA 742 four-spindle machining center. The four HSK-A100 motor spindles engage the large workpieces in parallel at a distance of 350 mm with a total of up to 1,360 Nm. Like the two- and three-spindle versions of the BA 7 series, the BA 742 ensures high-precision 4- and 5-axis machining of chassis parts, brake components or industrial gears made of cast iron, cast steel and steel. With higher productivity, the BA 742 requires 60 percent less total electrical power and 65 percent less floor space compared to four single-spindle presses.

Around the world, the automotive industry relies on modular kits with a high proportion of common parts. As a result, the quantities of machined components are rising sharply. “With four-spindle machining centers, manufacturers increase their capacities and productivity as they would otherwise only with rotary transfer machines, but they can react much more flexibly to the ever shorter life cycles,” emphasizes Reiner Fries, Managing Director Sales at SW. “With four HSK-A100 motor spindles, we provide the highest cutting performance available on the market in a series machining center, and our customers achieve the shortest cycle times in the production of large components.”

REDUCED MAIN AND AUXILIARY TIMES

With feed rates of up to 70 m/min, the four HSK-A100s, each rated at 28 kW, machine workpieces at high speed even with large-area tools, reducing machining time in parallel for four workpieces. In addition, SW shortens non-productive times. Loading takes place in parallel with the main time via a double swivel beam clamped on both sides. For 5-axis machining, it is equipped with four independent planetary tables driven by torque motors. The chip-to-chip time for a tool change is only 3.75 seconds for all four workpieces. A fixture change takes less than 30 minutes. The inductive tool breakage monitoring system simultaneously detects four tools in the magazine area without affecting the cycle time.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY: 60 PERCENT LESS TOTAL CONNECTED LOAD

Despite its high performance, the BA 742 sets new standards in resource efficiency. “Four single-spindle machines with even approximately the same performance data require a total connected load of well over 400 kVA; with the BA 742, 160 kVA is sufficient, which is at least 60 percent less,” emphasizes Wolfgang Armleder, head of development at SW. Energy-saving controllable cooling lubricant pumps, accumulator/charging circuits in the hydraulics and reduced moving masses in all axes contribute to this. In addition, the crane hook machine with the same dimensions as two- and three-spindle machines of the BA 7 series gets by with about 65 percent less floor space than four comparable single-spindle machines.

SAME PRECISION THROUGHOUT THE RANGE

The basic monoblock design minimizes deflection and ensures optimum force flow between the machining unit and the workpiece carrier. The virtually complete weight compensation in the vertical axis ensures high positioning accuracy even with off-center loads and reduces the thermal load on the feed motors. All feed pockets are equipped with direct absolute travel measuring systems. The four-spindle BA 742 thus achieves the same precision as the two- and three-spindle machines of the BA 7 series.

The modularly expandable tool magazine holds up to 96 tools. Loading can be done either from the front or from the top. SW implements complete solutions via bartsch GmbH, which is part of the company, and offers customized automation for loading and unloading the large four-spindle truck. The mobile arrangement of the robot on a working platform has proven itself here, because this ensures free access to the machine from all four sides. “With the BA 742, manufacturers achieve the next level of productivity in the heavy machining of large workpieces,” Reiner Fries is certain.

You will also receive the appropriate image material for our press releases.
